CAN A SCAR EVER BECOME A SKIN AGAIN?
I was in the kitchen when I heard the sound of the doorbell, immediately I told my younger sister to check the door for the visitor. As she got to the door, I heard her scream "ghost". I rushed out of the kitchen only for me to see Phoebe my elder sister's friend who everyone thought was dead.
"Aunty Phoebe". I called her name to know if she is truly the one standing in our living room.
She moved closer to touch me to dissuade me from alerting the neighbours. My sister was also astonished, before she could say anything, she hugged her lost friend. Though they had fallen out few months ago , her friend still means a lot to her.
"Phoebe". My elder sister called her name once again.
"I am alive. I didn't die. She assured my sister.
"Your disappearance is mysterious to me. We all know that Ray loves you dearly. So what happened?" My sister continued with curiosity boldly written on her face.
Phoebe took a deep breath and stood up from the chair. She went close to the window because she didn't want to face her friend.
"You all thought Ray loved me deeply but it is not true. His love did not come without a price, a price that I did not want to pay. All my trips to Dubai, London, France, the expensive cars and the house he bought for me meant something to Raymond." She stopped.
"What else will it mean? He wanted to marry you, though something was wrong with it." My sister cut in sharply.
Let me finish my story. The truth about Raymond is that he is a drug baron. His intentions were not genuine. Can you believe that Raymond has a wife with two kids in America. He only used the largess to pull the wool over our eyes. That very day he confessed to me, I was shattered. I was about to swear to an oath at gunpoint when the police interrupted us. He has deceived so many ladies into marriage so that he could use them for drug trafficking." She said.
"Phoebe, what about your tummy? I noticed some changes in you. You are pregnant." My sister asked still shocked.
"I wanted to tell him about the pregnancy before his confession and arrest. The pregnancy is close to 6 months. After we were arrested, I spent 5 months until the day he told the policemen of my innocence. I was released last week. Everyone has been avoiding me like a leper. They usually call me an ex- convict. My conscience will not let me rest. I felt I should settle our differences dear friend." She said with regret.
"You didn't offend me. I only told you to be careful the day you came to my house but your blind love for him pushed you to defend him at the expense of our friendship." My sister consoled her.
"I am travelling to Port Harcourt today. I can't continue to stay in Lagos. The shame is just too much for me to bear. I wanted to marry a rich man, I didn't know that his wealth was a facade. Hmmmm...." She went to the door and closed it, leaving us to decide, give the whole story a conclusion. Can a scar ever become a skin like it used to be?
